In a sport dominated by Asian and European players, what Brazilian Hugo Calderano has achieved is truly notable. Ever since he appeared -two years ago- in the table tennis world circuit, the player from Rio de Janeiro has ranked among the best players of the world. This makes him one of the American sport stars Peruvian fans will see in Lima 2019.
At 22 years, Calderano’s evolution is unstoppable. Last year he won the bronze medal at the World Tour Grand Final and started climbing the ranking without stop. Moreover, he had a great participation at the Hungary World Championship (lost only to Chinese world champion Ma Long), and a few weeks ago, he was crowned as the first Latin American champion of the German Bundesliga.
Calderano's main goal is to win his second gold medal in the Pan American Games. In Toronto 2015, when he was still a junior, he beat his countryman Gustavo Tsuboi, ten years older than him. In Lima 2019, besides Tsuboi, he will be challenged by American contender Kanak Jha (19). They already had a tough battle at the 2018 Pan American Championship.
Fans going to the Sport Center 3 at VIDENA will watch high-level matches, as the competition is also a qualifier for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Tickets can be purchased at www.lima2019.pe/tickets. “My dream is to win a medal in Tokyo and I know I can do it,”said Calderano, who is coming to Lima 2019 in his best conditions.
