Milco, Lima 2019 Games Mascot, attended the closing ceremony of the summer workshops of Barranco Municipality at the Luis Gálvez Chipoco stadium. This sport activity also helped to promote the Pan American and Parapan American Games to be held on July 26 in Lima.
José Ayulo, Youth and Sports Deputy Manager of the Barranco Municipality congratulated the Lima 2019 initiative to attend the closing ceremony. “We are strengthening our sports workshops and that was confirmed in summer with more than 2000 participants. People are putting their faith in sport,” he said.
“The stadium opens its doors for them, since there are several athletes who use it as their home, such as the Lima 2019 ambassador, the athlete Andy Martinez. This is the example we want to give to our neighbors. We want people to adopt sport as a way of life and if they do not have the possibility, in the future, we want them to feel that in the Municipality they have a space to practice sports so they can be proud of being part of a district team,” Ayulo said.
The Gálvez Chipoco stadium is the training location for several local athletes living in Lima, as well as for athletes who visit the capital, such as the runner Jovana de la Cruz, who is training to make her return after a year and a half due to an injury and achieve the mark that will allow her to participate in the Lima 2019 Games. “I am very excited because I know that many people are training hard and children will have goals and dreams after seeing so many athletes competing,” Jovana said.
On the other hand, Marjorie Solari, athletics professor of the Barranco Municipality workshops, highlighted the importance of the Lima 2019 Games. “It is a good initiative to spark children's motivation on sports. I always tell them that they have to improve their marks, compete with their fellows, and in other greater competitions afterwards. We encourage them to participate.”
Lima 2019 was present with two exhibition basketball and football 5-a-side games, which delighted children. They also took the opportunity to meet and play with Milco, who greeted them with open arms as a symbol of friendship, thus promoting one of the values of the Pan American and Parapan American Games.
