Paracas will be the competition venue for Lima 2019 Pan American Games to be held from July 26, 2019 in Peru.
Lima 2019 President Carlos Neuhaus highlighted that sailing is giving Peru international recognition.
Paracas, natural venue for sailing competitions in Peru, hosted the best representatives and candidates for medals in Lima 2019 Pan American Games. They gave a Master Class to share the secrets of these disciplines that will be part of the most important multi-sport event in the Americas to be held for the first time in Peru from July 26, 2019.
Local, national and international sports journalists participated in this master class.
“What we were trying to do is to show what sailing is. This sport is also giving us international recognition that will be repeated in the Pan American Games,” Lima 2019 President Carlos Neuhaus declared.
He stressed Paracas will be one of the most important sailing venues. “Pan American sailing competitions will be held in this beautiful bay,” he claimed.
South American Windsurf champion María Belén Bazo, World Sunfish champion Jean Paul de Trazegnies, and Paloma Schmidt are among the main sailing athletes who were responsible for giving the Master Class. They explained everything related to their discipline. Peruvian athletes Diana Tudela, María Pia Van Oordt, Francesco Puliatti, Cristina Salinas, and Javier Arribas also participated in this event.
Running regattas
“Sailing has many classes such as sunfish, laser radial, kite foiling, windsurf, RSX, and snipe. Kite foiling will be a new class for Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Our sport consists of running regattas within the racing marks, that are like circuits limited by buoys,” María Belén Bazo explained.
The Peruvian athlete added that the race begins with a starting line. Then, you need to sail a sequence, depending on the championship, and head towards the buoys by sailing close hauled (against the wind), beam reach (perpendicular to the wind) and running.
Bazo indicated that championships take around 4 or 5 days, and points are earned, according to the position in which the competitor finishes. The one with the lowest points wins the competition.
Real sailing experience
The participants of this Master Class also got to experience sailing with the athletes on the sea of Paracas. This event was used to present the natural venue that will welcome the 41 countries that will participate in Lima 2019 Games.
Bahía de Paracas was chosen as a venue for the Lima 2019 Games because of its excellent winds throughout the year and its hotel infrastructure. This makes it the best sailing spot in South America and the world.
Lima 2019 Ambassador Dunia Felices and outstanding Peruvian athletes María Fernanda Reyes, Carlos Felipa and Hernán Viera also participated in this master class.
