No one was allowed to touch the lamp that protected the Pan American flame last July 2 at the pyramids of Teotihuacán, Mexico. During its journey across Peru, the torch will be guarded by 30 members of the Peruvian Armed Forces.
The participation of the Peruvian Army, the Peruvian Air Force and the Peruvian Navy in the Lima 2019 Pan American Games cannot go unseen. They are always running next to the flame and do not let it extinguish. They have been present in the most eye-catching photos of the caravan that is currently traveling across Peru, just like the one taken at the La Joya Air Base in Arequipa. A wonderful image was saved for the Lima 2019 golden file when the FAP Julio López Cubas raised the Pan American Torch in front of two Mirage aircrafts before overflying the Misti on an MI8 helicopter.
As we all know the Lima 2019 Pan American Flame arrived from Teotihuacán, Mexico, on July 2 and it has been under the protection of the Peruvian Armed Forces since then. Their deployment was seen for the first time when the torch that guards the Pan American Flame was taken on an Armed Forces aircraft to Vinicunca, also known as the seven-color mountain, in Cusco. “This is the first time that such an important event takes place in Peru, and we must fulfill this mission, like every mission that is entrusted to us,” stated the Lieutenant Milagros Aliaga, while she gave orders to the security team in the city of Huánuco.
The arrival of the flame at the Colca Canyon also had the support of the Peruvian Armed Forces. Besides being the first tourist destination in Arequipa, the Colca Canyon became the relay start line for two outstanding athletes from the Caylloma Province: the athlete Glenny Mamani and the football player Carlos Choquecondo, who claimed the title at the Apertura tournament.
Until now, the Peruvian Armed Forces have been constantly participating in the special operations of the Pan American Torch Relay. The Peruvian Navy also presented two modern police vehicles, which were used to complete the relay segment from the Titicaca Lake to the Esteves Island in Puno. Meanwhile, the Peruvian Army will spring into action in the city of Tacna and at the Real Felipe Fortress in Callao.
The Pan American Flame that is currently traveling across Peru is guarded by 30 officials: 10 from the Army, 10 from the Air Forces, and 10 from the Peruvian Navy. In each group, there are two women. “There haven’t been any incidents so far. Although a stranger tried to take the torch in Ica, but we were able to avoid it. Our responsibility is to protect this flame,” said the Lieutenant of the Peruvian Navy, Milagros Aliaga.
