SOME NUMBERS OF THE BUENOS AIRES 2018 SUMMER YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

Buenos Aires, Argentina was the host city of the third edition of the Summer Youth Olympic Games. It was successfully held and gathered thousands of people in competitions.

It was the first time such an important event was done in our continent and represented a milestones for the competition organization. According to the Organizing Committee, a total of 1 001 496 people attended to different venues to watch the competitions. A total of 4 000 athletes participated in the competition.

215 000 people met in Avenida 9 de Julio in Buenos Aires to watch the Opening Ceremony, focusing on the well-known Obelisk that identifies the capital of Argentina.

Buenos Aires 2018 achieved gender equality because it was the first time in Olympic history that 50% women participated in the competition. During these Games, 206 National Olympic Committees were represented.

Argentina had the largest delegation of the Games, with a total of 141 athletes. Cook Islands had the smallest delegation with the only swimmer Bede Aitu.

South African Luke Davids clocked 10.15 seconds and won the men's 100 meters, the best time registered in the Games.

During the Games, there were 550 live stream hours offered by the Olympic Channel.

Regarding the competitions, Russian swimmers Kliment Kolesnikov and Andrei Minakov obtained 14 different medals. Each one won six gold and one silver medal in the Olympic pool.

The Japanese gymnast Takeru Kitazono obtained five gold medals for male competitions such as rings, parallel bars, horizontal bars and all-around.

Also, the Japanese Kodai Naraoka and Indian Lakshya Sen scored 79 incredible points in the never-ending badminton match.

Furthermore, regarding other numbers of the Buenos Aires Games, around 8 000 plates of food were served in the dining hall of the Youth Olympic Village four times a day. Around 7 000 pizzas were served in a night. This option was added to the menu by the dining hall responsible and 200 000 school-age children could live the experience of the Summer Youth Olympic Games thanks to the program “School at the Games” of Buenos Aires 2018.

Finally, more than 1 200 cultural and educational activities were offered to the audience in all the venues of the 2018 Buenos Aires Games.

Peru will have a similar experience from July 26, 2019 with the Lima 2019 Pan American Games opening ceremony, gathering 41 representing delegations of the continent. There will be more than 6 000 athletes for this international competition that will be held in Peru for the first time.
