Only 39 days are left until the long-awaited event: the Pan American and Parapan American Games. Peru will experience the biggest multi-sport event in the continent on the night of July 26, while celebrating the national holidays. The Lima 2019 Opening Ceremony will take place at the National Stadium: a celebration full of color and joy thanks to the presence of national and international artists.
The night of July 26 will mark the beginning of the biggest event ever held in Lima and Peru, as far as competitions are concerned. Over 6680 athletes will participate in the Pan American Games. They will parade at the National Stadium carrying the flags of the 41 member countries of Panam Sports in the Americas. Nearly 700 of these athletes will be representing Peru, dreaming of victory in front of the home crowd.
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will feature 17 days of competitions and ceremonies between July 26 and August 11, to take place in 39 venues such as the National Sports Village (VIDENA) in San Luis, Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, Callao Regional Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas Surfing Sports Center, among others.
START OF THE COMPETITIONS
However, a few days prior to the Opening Ceremony, on July 24, some sports competitions will start at two different venues. The first will take place at the Beach Volleyball Stadium in Costa Verde, in the district of San Miguel. The event will start at 9:00 am in a stage that is being prepared for these Games. This competition will feature 64 male and female athletes.
Afterwards, at 1:00 pm, Sports Center 1 at the VIDENA in the district of San Luis will host the women's handball competitions. A total of 112 athletes from eight countries will participate in these matches.
Teams competing in handball are divided into two groups. Group A, featuring Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil and a team qualified by repechage (to be played between Chile, Mexico, Guatemala and Canada). Group B features the United States, Dominican Republic, Argentina and Peru.
QUALIFICATION FOR TOKYO 2020
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will include 39 sports and 61 disciplines, in which athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. There will be more sports than in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, where a total of 32 sports will be featured. Out of all the Lima 2019 competitions, 22 are the qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The competitions offering qualification for Tokyo 2020 are: athletics, badminton, handball, swimming, artistic swimming, diving, equestrian sports (jumping, dressage and eventing), hockey, karate (kata and kumite), pentathlon, weightlifting, surf, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, sailing and water polo.
