Moquegua. The Pan American Torch arrived for its traditional relay tour amid a great celebration in the main streets and avenues of the city of Moquegua.
In total, 72 torchbearers of different ages participated with a shared motivation: to carry the Flame lit in Mexico and in the citadel of Machu Picchu, whose final destination is the city of Lima.
After a six-hour journey starting in the city of Puno, the Pan American Torch started his tour at 25 de Noviembre Stadium, Moquegua, and passed from hand to hand through different landmarks of this beautiful city such as the Cathedral, where folk dance groups delighted the Pan American delegation; the Cristo Blanco, located in the city’s impressive viewpoint, and finished at the Municipal Coliseum of Moquegua, where hundreds of citizens of all ages experienced the tour as a real celebration.
Here, the cauldron was lit and after a protocol ceremony, more than 30 teenagers, wearing the Peruvian national team shirt, made sure the celebration ended on a high note.
The Pan American Torch will travel through 26 cities across Peru before arriving in Lima, host city of the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games, to be held in Peru for the first time ever.
