The best athletes born in Arequipa, the White City, will be in charge of carrying the Pan American torch, which arrives in the city tomorrow, continuing the journey that started July 4 in Cuzco city, after being lit in the Machu Picchu Citadel.
Among the torch bearers are brothers Genaro and Ernesto Neyra, football legends of Arequipa; Daniel Vizcarra, who will represent us in the shooting competition at the Pan American Games; and Jenny Vargas, who will compete at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
Among those who will have the privilege of carrying the Pan American torch are the following athletes: Mary Luz Andía, an athlete qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in the 20 km race walk, who will also compete at the Pan American Games in athletics, just like Marco Vilca and Zulema Arenas, and Alonso Gamero, who will be competing in cycling.
The torch will arrive in Arequipa on Sunday, after spending the night in Moquegua and passing through the Lagunas de Mejía. There will be 80 torchbearers in the White City, including athletes and citizens who were nominated as ‘Peruvians whose stories shine’ for their work in favor of Arequipa, in addition to representing Olympic and Paralympic Values.
The 80 torchbearers will travel 14.5 kilometers. The group travelling across the country will travel 233.5 kilometers between Arequipa and Moquegua. It will pass through the main streets of the White City, as well as Yanahuara, ending its journey in the Plaza de Armas, where the Pan American cauldron lighting ceremony will take place before it continues its journey to Nazca and Ica.
The torch will travel over 6500 km in 23 days and across 26 Peruvian cities before arriving in Lima on July 26.
ABOUT LIMA 2019
The Opening Ceremony of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games will be held at the National Stadium on July 26, 2019. This continental event will gather 6680 athletes from 41 countries and delegations from the Americas.
There will be 17 days of competitions and ceremonies between July 26 and August 11, which will take place in 14 districts of Lima and Callao at various venues like VIDENA, Villa María Sports Center, Callao Regional Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas, among others.
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will include 39 sports and 61 disciplines, in which athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. A total of 22 disciplines are qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Parapan American Games will gather 1890 Para athletes from 33 countries, participating in 17 sports and 18 disciplines. Competitions will take place from August 23 to September 1, 2019. Thirteen sports will be qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
