The Peruvian team won three medals the first day of the South American Youth, Cadet and Junior Championships held at Lima Convention Center (LCC). In the pre-cadet category (between 11 to 15 years old) Mariana Soriano and Víctor Ramírez won the women’s and men’s silver medals in foil.
Soriano lost to Brazil’s Gabriella Vianna 15-8, while Ramírez fell to Brazil’s Lorenzo Mion 15-3. Casandra Cruz from Peru won the bronze medal in the semifinals, after losing to her compatriot Soriano in a tight match 13-6.
“It took me a while to feel comfortable, and I quickly lost my focus. My opponent from Brazil started to rack up points fast, and it was impossible to even the score. I’m just glad it was at a South American level because now I can learn from my mistakes for major competitions. It was a tight match and I had a good performance, but there is still room for improvement,” said Víctor Ramírez.
Brazil won three gold medals; meanwhile, Bolivia and Venezuela took one gold medal each. Moreover, Alejandra Piedrahita from Colombia surprised us all by claiming the pre-cadet gold medal. Piedrahita defeated Brazil’s Victoria Vizeu 15-12 in épée, in an epic final for the pre-cadet category.
