Juan Pablo Varillas, Nicolás Álvarez, Sergio Galdós, Dominique Schaefer, Anastasia Iamachkine, and Dana Guzmán will represent Peru in tennis at the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, as officially announced by the Peruvian Tennis Federation.
The six athletes were nominated according to their places in the world ranking and their results in international events, and confirmed by the two captains, Américo “Tupi” Venero and Laura Arraya, in men’s and women’s tennis, respectively.
The choice of singles and doubles pairs will be announced in the upcoming days.
Tennis is one of the 39 sports in competition during the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, starting on July 26. Winners in singles and doubles (men’s and women’s), as well as in mixed doubles, will gain direct qualification for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The competitions will be played in a knock-out format. All singles matches will be best of three sets with tiebreak; while all doubles matches will be two sets with tiebreak. If a tie exists, the third set will be decided by a 10-point match tiebreaker. All matches will be played using the no-ad scoring system.
TENNIS AT LIMA 2019
Tennis competitions will be held at the stadium of the Lawn Tennis Club, from July 29 to August 4. A total of 80 tennis players, both male and female, from 16 countries will participate in the Games, competing in knockout round states.
There will be six stages in men’s singles, starting with a round of 64, and five stages in both women’s singles and men's doubles, starting with a round of 32. Meanwhile, athletes will start competing in a round of 16 in women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
ABOUT LIMA 2019
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games is a continental event that will gather 6680 athletes from 41 countries and will start on July 26 at the National Stadium. There will be 17 days of competitions, which will take place in 14 districts of Lima and Callao. Some of the main venues will be VIDENA, Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, Callao Regional Sports Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas, among others.
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will include 39 sports and 61 disciplines, in which athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. A total of 22 disciplines are qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
