The Peru International 2019 Badminton Tournament entered its final stage in singles, doubles and mixed doubles, after the Peruvian delegation won two medals in an exciting semifinal. Pairs Daniela Macias and Dánica Nishimura (women’s doubles) and Diego Subauste along with Bruno Barrueto (men’s doubles) won bronze medals at the Lima 2019 test event.
Daniela and Dánica, who have played together for 10 years, faced Brazilian pair Jaqueline and Samia Lima in a tough competition. The match was defined in a third-set tiebreaker; however, the Peruvian players missed a match point and lost 23-21, despite overcoming an early disadvantage on the scoreboard. They will climb to the podium tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Bruno Barrueto and Diego Subauste lost to Guatemalan pair Aníbal Marroquín and Rubén Castellanos in a game which became an uphill task due to the good level of the Central American players. Although they reacted in the second set and started winning it, the opponents’ experience prevailed on the court.
SPECTACULAR FINALS
Two-time Pan American champion, Guatemalan Kevin Cordon, will look for the final victory against Canadian Brian Yang. “There have been high-level competitions in all stages. This tournament adds points to the world ranking and qualification for Tokyo 2020, so the competitors are technically and physically well prepared,” Cordon said.
In women's, Cuban Taymara Oropesa produced an upset by beating American Disha Gupta and will play against Indonesian Ghaida Nurul tomorrow in what will be an equally contested match. “They were truly exhausting matches that pushed me to the limit. A match just as demanding awaits me against Ghaida, but I'll go for gold,” said Taymara.
Admission to the Lima 2019 test event is free of charge. You can access through Gate 2 at VIDENA, located on Avenida Del Aire, and head for the new Sports Center 3. The Competition begins at 10:00 and will end approximately after midday.
