PERU WINS BRONZE IN SOUTH AMERICAN FENCING TEAM COMPETITION

Junior teams (between 13 and 20 years old) competed in the disciplines of Sabre, Foil and Épée on the fourth day of the South American Youth, Cadet and Junior Championship.

Chile and Brazil dominated the competition on the three disciplines, alternating gold and silver. Chile won two gold medals (in Male Épée and Female Foil) and one silver (Female Sabre), while Brazil picked up two silver medals (in Male Épée and Female Foil) and one gold medal (Female Sabre).

Bronze medals in these three disciplines were won by teams from Argentina (Male Épée), Colombia (Female Sabre), and Peru (Female Foil).

Peruvian Team members, Alessia Huallpa, Namie Kawasaki, Michela Somocurcio, and Nabia Ruiz, were happy with their results playing home, considering it was their first time competing as a team. This is a sign of many more achievements to come in the future.

“It feels great to win a medal in Peru. Here we have the support of all the people behind each achievement; armourer, therapists, coaches and families who sometimes cannot be with us. Having your mother or father there is amazing”, said an excited Ruiz.

“I think knowing that we measure up to Chile, Brazil and Argentina reassures us. We have to keep working to show that Peru has good fencers and they just need their support”, assured Somocurcio.

TEST EVENT

The test event will come to an end tomorrow at the LCC (Lima Convention Center) Fencing Center, which is the future venue of Fencing Events during the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

In the last day, we will continue the competitions with team events; Female Épée, Male Sabre and Male Foil.

Event will start at 10:00 a.m. and it will be finished approximately at 2:00 pm. There is no need to pay to attend the competitons. Entrace gate is located at the Avenida Arqueología 206.
