Silvana Segura and Diana Bazalar are two Peruvian athletes participating in different competitions, but they share something. They both hold the national record in their disciplines and wish to have a great performance in the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
Diana arrives after competing in a Grand Prix in Colombia where she won the gold in 100-meter hurdles. “I was very happy and felt the race had been really good and that I made a good mark,” she said.
Diana holds the current national record and knows the Pan American Games are great chance to break it. “Currently, my mark is 13’36 and my main goal is to break it. I want to achieve 13’20. Advancing to the finals and winning a medal is hard because the competition level is very high”, she mentioned.
After overcoming her injuries, Diana is training double-time because she knows that “it is always a great honor to represent Peru, even more so when we are locals and you feel a different excitement because everyone wants you to improve.”
Silvana’s message is “cheer for us on and don’t leave us alone, because even if we don’t win a medal, we will be giving our 100% to make Peru proud,” she said.
In search of the Triple jump
She told us she started participating in speed events as a child. Then moved to middle-distance, but ended up in Triple jump. Today, Silvana Segura holds the national record and aims to continue her spectacular jumps, even though her marks were not what she expected in her recent participation in Colombia.
“I am fine tuning some details and preparing for Lima 2019,” she said.
Winning a medal is hard. Colombia and Venezuela have the world and Olympic champion, respectively. Nonetheless, the Olympic Games are her goal. “My mark is 13’56 and want to reach 14’30 to go to Tokyo. We need to be realistic, a Pan American medal is every athlete’s dream. They all have marks over 14’50, but let's hope I will give my best performance of the year.”
Silvana will be traveling to Japan for her last competition before the Games and return very motivated on August 9, the day of her event.
“It is something I think of every day: a full stadium. It will be a top-level show because of the world-class infrastructure and there will be very good results,” she stated.
