Tickets for the Parapan American Games went on sale today. The Games will begin on August 23. On the occasion of this milestone, members of the Peruvian sitting volleyball team performed an exhibition at 6004 Santiago Antúnez de Mayolo school from Villa El Salvador, as part of the “Soy Lima 2019” campaign.
Jhon Córdova, Víctor Arias, Miguel Fernández and Faustino Cuadros, members of the Peruvian sitting volleyball team, together with José Rojas and Martín Cano from Asociación Deportiva Superando Barreras (ASUBA), proved that sports know no barriers or limitations.
“It was quite an exciting moment. It reminded me of my school days because my impairment is congenital,” stated Faustino Cuadros, who plays as a libero even though he was born without either hand.
Jenny Ventocilla, who also plays sitting volleyball and will represent Peru at the Parapan American Games as part of the Para badminton team, also participated in the exhibition.
“We’re thrilled that kids are aware of adaptive sports. I hope this continues and so they’ll realize that impairment does not mean incapability,” pointed out Jenny.
Paralympic values such as equality, determination, inspiration and courage were expressed in the Lima 2019 socio-cultural activity. They were also reflected on the participation of the sitting volleyball athletes, and complemented by the 10 minutes of physical activity promoted by the Ministry of Education.
“We weren't expecting such a beautiful welcome, but this is important because it persuades students that everything is possible as long as you’re determined to carry on,” highlighted Jhon Córdova.
“They should realize that we have no limits. There are people at home who might not know that they can try this sport,” said Víctor Arias.
Sitting volleyball events will be held at Callao Regional Sports Center, from August 23 to 28.
“We’re training hard to give a good show and represent Peru in the best possible way,” concluded Miguel Fernández.
