The Peruvian women’s rugby team finished its preparation to travel to Asunción, Paraguay, tonight, where the Rugby Sevens South American Championship will be held. Besides defining the continental order, this championship will serve as training for the pre-Olympic tournament and the Pan American Games, that will be held in Lima in June and July, respectively.
High intensity physical works and tactical exercises with and without the ball took place at the rugby stadium, built by the Pan American Games Organizing Committee, which has become one of the greatest legacies left by Lima 2019 for national sport.
“This tournament is very useful. Final positions will determine the South American placing before the pre-Olympic tournament. We know we still have a lot to improve, that our limit is very high, but with fields like the one in Villa María del Triunfo, the road to reach the other teams’ level will be easier,” said the team captain, Rosemary Quesada.
The team’s coach, Pablo Vila Galarza, called up Samantha Chuquivala, Natalia Correa, Michelle Flores, Lucy Granda, Andrea Masías, Betriz Orcotoma, Paula Pacheco, Lieneke Ratto, Melissa Vargas and Karoline Vergara.
The first test of the stadium will be in early June, with the Women’s Pre-Olympic tournament for Tokyo 2020, with the participation of 10 South American teams. The champion will secure a place for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Argentina, Brazil and Peru have already qualified for Lima 2019 Games. The next best placed country will secure the last quota for the Pan American Games.
