Baseball is one of the sports to be played at the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center during the Pan American Games. Part of the “Soy Lima 2019” campaign, the Peruvian national team performed an exhibition at the Manuel Scorza Torres School .
National team members Andrés Hamamoto, César Vásquez, Ignacio Castro, Roberto Ayarza and Gianpierre Reaño played with Primary and High School students.
“This is a new and beautiful experience for us, to spend time with students and show them another sport and inspire them to reach for a better future”, said César Vásquez, infield player.
Afterwards, students had their 10 minutes of physical activity and, then, one of the National Team spent time with them as one of the activities of the socio-cultural program prepared by Lima 2019 to promote Olympic and Paralympic values.
“Sharing this experience with students is rewarding. Good practices are the best way to spread the word and I to keep doing this kind of activities to get people to know about baseball”, highlighted the pitcher Gianpierre Reaño.
After the exhibition, National team members showed students batting techniques. The prize for the best hitter of the practice was an autographed ball.
“Interacting with the students is a different experience for us and it motivates us to compete and achieve better results. The best part is that we are the hosts and we must leave the name of our country high”, said Vásquez.
Baseball will be played at the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center from July 29 to August 4 and the national team members hope students and neighbors to be more involved with the sport and that stadiums are full when Peru plays at home.
“It will motivate and inspire them to attend practice sessions. The stadium is close and is a temple to us, and a home to them, I hope they attend training sessions”, said Reaño.
“This sport will be popularized and I hope to see them soon with gloves, bats and balls”, concluded Vásquez
