The Rugby Stadium at the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center will officially open its doors to welcome the 10 best women’s rugby teams of the Americas, who will compete at the Tokyo 2020 pre-Olympic qualifying tournament. This Lima 2019 test event will grant two repechage quota places for the Olympic Games next year.
Peru will make its debut against Paraguay this Saturday at 10:00 in Group A, which also comprises Venezuela and Brazil, the strongest contender in this tournament. In group B, Chile will play against Uruguay, and Argentina will face off Costa Rica. Colombia will rest on the first day.
The first two teams in each pool will pass to the semifinals. Then, the two winners will compete for the gold medal in the finals, while the remaining teams will compete for the third place. This event is organized by the Organizing Committee of the Pan American and Parapan American Games. Admission is free of charge for general public.
“Our team started its preparation four years ago, and we’ve evolved both physically and tactically. In this tournament, we’ll try to qualify for Tokyo 2020. At least by repechage. The Villa María del Triunfo Stadium is perfect to practice high-level rugby, and we’ll have the support of our fans,” said Peruvian rugby player Caroline Vergara.
RUGBY AT LIMA 2019
The rugby competitions during the Pan American Games will be held on July 26, 27 and 28. Two groups of four teams each will participate in men’s and women’s. Then, they will compete in quarterfinals, based on the team ranking in the first stage, to define the four semifinalists. On the last day, the two best teams will compete for the gold medal.
Among the opponents of the Peruvian women’s team are Brazil, Argentina, Canada, United States, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago. A quota place will be granted to a South American team at the pre-Olympic tournament that will be held this week in Lima.
Meanwhile, the Peruvian men’s team, known as “Los Tumis”, will try to qualify at the pre-Olympic tournament that will take place in June in Chile. The “Sevens” that have been confirmed for Lima 2019 are Canada (two-time Pan American champion), Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, United States, Jamaica, and Guyana.
As opposed to rugby union (15 players), this version is played in two halves of 7 minutes, with a break of 2 minutes. If scores are still tied, a sudden death extra time will be played in 5-minute periods. Therefore, the competition will only last three days, and each team will compete in two matches per day.
