PRESIDENT AND MEMBERS OF COMMITTEE ON EDUCATION, YOUTH AND SPORT MONITOR LIMA 2019 INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS

The Lima 2019 infrastructure projects were monitored by the President of the Committee on Education, Youth and Sport of the Congress, Milagros Salazar, and Congress members of such working group, Juan Carlos Gonzales and Javier Velásquez Quesquén. Among the construction works for Lima 2019 the Pan American and Parapan American Village in Villa El Salvador, the Villa El Salvador Sports Center, the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, the Miguel Grau Coliseum, the Callao Sports Center and Costa Verde.

The delegation was escorted and led by Wilhelm Funcke, Lima 2019 Project and Infrastructure manager, who explained the progress made so far ahead of the Pan American and Parapan American Games and the great legacy this event will leave behind for Peruvians.

Salazar was impressed by Lima 2019 facilities in The Committee’s third official visit. She stated that even there was not enough time, all deadlines are being met.

“We can see a coordinated work. All deadlines are being met thanks to the UK Government-to-government agreement. I’d like to apply the same method to other areas, such as health care (hospital constructions) or national reconstruction. The success of these Games not only depends on the Executive Committee, but on all Peruvians. We all must work to heighten our country’s name.”

Congressman Juan Carlos Gonzales was also satisfied with the progress and expressed that Peruvians must aim for excellence in sports the competitions that will start in our country in just four months.

“I’m surprised. There are some missing details, but great progress has been made. I hope Peruvians can listen to the National Anthem with gold medals. We're here for the gold; we don’t want second places. We want to win as many medals as possible for Peru.”

Venues in the Final Stage

Lima 2019 infrastructure projects are in their final construction stage. They will be at 95% by March 31, according to the established schedule.

In this visit, congressmen have confirmed that the Pan American and Parapan American Village has been completely finished ahead of its official deadline scheduled for March 31. There are seven towers with 1096 apartments: 548 of them of 70 m2, 212 of 73 m2, and 336 of 75 m2. These last apartments were modified and were made accessible for people with impairment. Each building has four elevators with a capacity for up to 18 people and wheelchair access.

The Miguel Grau Coliseum, wrestling and boxing venue during the Pan American and Parapan American Games and goalball venue during the Parapan American Games, has been fully remodeled. Evacuation stairs were expanded and access ramps to the sports venue were installed. Works also include the installation of an elevator, so people with impairment can enter the VIP box and the conference room. In addition, 2400 new stands were installed for spectators.

The Callao Sports Center, volleyball and taekwondo venue for the Pan American Games and sitting Volleyball and Para taekwondo venue for the Parapan American Games, will have a capacity for 6100 spectators in fixed and retractable grandstands. Floating floors recommended by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) have been installed. It also has two training courts.

The Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center will house softball, baseball, water polo, Basque pelota, hockey, rugby and archery venue during the Pan American Games, as well as football 5-a-side and football 7-a-side during the Parapan American Games. This venue will be delivered by the first week of April. Rugby fields will be handed out tomorrow, whilst paleta fronton and Basque pelota will be delivered this Saturday.

The Costa Verde infrastructure works are underway – mainly overlay – and will be finished by June.
