This morning the President of Peru, Martín Vizcarra Cornejo, supervised the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, which was finished in advance and will be the main competition venue for team sports during the Lima 2019 Pan American Games and Parapan American Games.
The Lima 2019 President and Executive Director, Carlos Neuhaus Tudela, toured the stages located at this venue in Southern Lima. They visited the hockey, rugby, softball, baseball and Peruvian frontón stadiums, as well as the Aquatic Center that will house all water polo competitions.
There, the President stressed the importance of this project located in Villa María del Triunfo, which was finished in advance for the training sessions of the Peruvian team. “We toured the sport infrastructure built in Villa María del Triunfo for Lima 2019. We’re one month and a week away from the opening of the Pan American Games on July 26, just a few days before the Peruvian National Holidays, and the infrastructure project has already been completed. This venue will be the main competition center for team sport events.”
“The Peruvian delegations are currently training in their venues, which will give us a better chance of winning medals at Lima 2019. Forty-one countries from the Americas will take part in 39 sports. A total of 9,000 athletes will compete at the Pan American and Parapan American Games. It is estimated that 15,000 visitors directly related to sports will arrive at Lima as part of the delegations. Besides, many tourists will come to support their teams and visit Peru. Our country will welcome 175 thousand visitors due to this sport event since the Pan American Games are the most important sports celebration after the Olympic Games,” stated the president during his visit.
President Vizcarra also pointed out that the Peruvian government has decided to promote sports in the country and award the hard work of Peruvian athletes. “Out of the 39 sports included in the Pan American Games program, 22 will be qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. That’s why all athletes will give their best at Lima 2019. So, aside from the honor of representing their country, the Peruvian medalists will receive a reward. We’ve passed a law that grants them a free apartment at the Pan American Village in Villa El Salvador. Their effort will be acknowledged by the government. They’re high-level athletes and train all day long. Sports are a fundamental part of our society,” he added.
ROAD WORKS
President Martín Vizcarra also talked about the road works that are still underway around the Lima 2019 venues. “We’re repairing the access points, mainly in the streets and avenues nearby these venues. The works should be concluded by July 19, according to the Ministry of Housing who is carrying out this road improvement project. We’ll leave appropriate roads as a legacy,” he assured.
The head of state said the new sport infrastructure will encourage physical activity among the society. “This works are not only for this international competition. They’ll also have the latest technology for world-class competitions, so young people can practice sports. We’re happy for the victory of the Peruvian football team at the CONMEBOL America Cup, but there are many sports aside football. We need to encourage the practice of new disciplines too. We’ll have a good infrastructure to continue promoting sports practice and that will be a key aspect of the Lima 2019 legacy.”
Also, he praised the early conclusion of the construction works at the Parapan American Village in Villa El Salvador and announced he will also visit the Callao venue, where the Callao Sport Center, the Miguel Grau Coliseum and the Stadium of the National University of San Marcos are located. “All Lima inhabitants will live this sports celebration. We must promote sports for a healthy lifestyle. And I’d like to congratulate all those people participating in the organization of the Games because I’m sure Lima 2019 will be a success. Peru has shown it can rise to this kind of challenges,” he stressed before pointing out that Peruvians will celebrate their Independence Day with gold medals in marathon and in other disciplines that will be held on those days.
