Symbols, logos and other Lima 2019 works are duly protected by copyright laws, and preventive and restrictive measures will be taken to prevent piracy, announced the National Institute for the Defense of Free Competition and the Protection of Intellectual Property (INDECOPI).
Protected by this law are the Lima 2019 graphic line manual, the Lima 2019 Pan American Games logo, the pictograms, Milco (official Games mascot), among other symbols of the Games.
Ivo Gagliuffi Piercech, chairman of INDECOPI’s Board of Directors; Carlos Neuhaus Tudela, Lima 2019 president; Wendy Ledesma, director of Peru’s National Consumer Protection Authority and Fausto Vienrich, director of the Copyrights Commission, stressed the importance of the joint work these institutions have been doing in a press conference.
“I believe defending our brand is critical and we appreciated INDECOPI’s commitment with our country’s efforts, because we are all involved in this,” commented Neuhaus.
He also explained that the Special Project for the Planning and Development of the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games has licensed the production, sale, distribution and import of the Games official products to the consortium Extreem Mobi S.A.C. and Merch & Design S.A.C. “There are eleven Lima 2019 official products that will have logos and other copyright elements, such as plush toys, t-shirts, towels, caps, mugs, magnets, the official mascot and more.”
On his part, Gagliuffi stated that IDECOPI is aware that Lima 2019 is a major project that involves the whole country and that all its efforts are done in favor of Peru.
“We believe INDECOPI must be up to scratch and give the public, both Peruvian and international, a clear message: that they should be aware of their rights’ protection as consumers, of the licensees’ intellectual property rights protection and of all the people who have obtained the right to use Lima 2019 as a showcase of their brands.”
Let's all play against piracy
To this end, INDECOPI, through the Copyrights Commission Directorate (DDA), will intensify the preventive measures to avoid piracy of the works created for this international event.
To protect these rights, the DDA has been informing the municipalities where the competitions will take place on what preventive and control measures they should implement to avoid street trade of illegal products.
“The mayors have to become strategic partners of INDECOPI to prevent or react in case there is piracy of the Games official products,” stated Gagliuffi.
Furthermore, INDECOPI has been taking measures against any entry to Peru of products related to the Lima 2019 Games that lack the proper authorization. In addition, it will prohibit any audiovisual broadcast of the Games, either via radio, TV or digital media, unless authorized by the exclusive right holders of Lima 2019.
#We are all consumers
On the other hand, the information guide produced by INDECOPI digitally: https://bit.ly/2KscBf2– includes the recommendations for consumers and suppliers of products and services on demand during the Games.
The institution will also promote and protect the rights of people with impairments with the campaign “We are all consumers” to reinforce, in this opportunity, the Paralympic values of the Parapan American Games. The guide will include advices for the appropriate assistance of people with impairments.
Thus, it seeks to raise awareness in the Peruvian society and the business sector on how citizens with impairments are reliable consumers who contribute to the country’s economy.
