SAILORS, SKIERS, SHOOTERS AND WEIGHTLIFTERS AMONG THE FIRST FLAG BEARERS FOR THE LIMA 2019 PAN AMERICAN GAMES

Everything is getting ready for the opening of the biggest and the most important multi-sports event Peru has ever held. More than 6680 athletes from 41 countries will compete in the 18th edition of the Pan American Games at different venues in Lima, Callao, and Ica regions.

The best athletes in the continent are getting ready with a lot of expectations. Thus, many countries have already appointed their flag bearers who will lead the delegations' parade at the Pan American Games opening ceremony to be held on July 26 at the National Stadium.

Meanwhile, the Peruvian Olympic Committee will keep everyone in suspense until they release the designation on July 18. In Ecuador, the flag bearer is Tamara Salazar, the world runner-up in weightlifting. The athlete won the silver medal in the 81 kg category at the 2018 World Weightlifting Championships in Turkmenistan. Salazar also took the second place at the South American Championship in Cochabamba. She ranks sixth on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games qualification.

Jorge Orozco was chosen by the Mexican Olympic Committee to be the delegation flag bearer. Orozco will compete in trap shooting events. He was the first Mexican athlete to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

The Argentinian Olympic Committee chose Javier Conte to carry the flag for the Pan American Games. Conte took the bronze medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, together with Juan de la Fuente in the Yachting 470 class in sailing. He also won a gold medal in mixed lighting at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games with his fellows María Paula Salerno and Nicolás Fracchia.

The water skier Felipe Miranda was chosen by the Chilean Olympic Committee to lead the delegation at Lima 2019 as he is the two-time world champion in the open category. Moreover, Miranda is the South American athlete with the most Pan Am medals, six in total.

A LIVING LEGEND FROM CUBA

The Greco-Roman wrestler Mijaín López, a living legend of the Cuban sports and member of the Panam Sports Team, will be the flag bearer of his delegation at Lima 2019. He expects to win his fifth gold medal at the Pan American Games.

López is three times Olympic gold medalist and has won five world competitions. The Cuban athlete was the champion of the Santo Domingo 2003, Rio de Janeiro 2007, Guadalajara 2011, and Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. The wrestler will compete in the 130 kg category.

In Puerto Rico, the wrestler Franklin Gómez was chosen as the flag bearer. Gómez was born in the Dominican Republic, but he was raised in Puerto Rico. He has obtained medals in different international competitions. The 32-year-old athlete has participated in the Barranquilla 2018 and Veracruz 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, the Guadalajara 2011 and Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, and the Rio 2016 and London 2012 Olympic Games.

He won a bronze medal at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, gold medals at the Guadalajara 2011 Pan American Games and the Veracruz 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, and silver medals at the Barranquilla 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games at the Turkey 2011 World Championship, among others.

In Central America, Roberto Hernández was also chosen to lead the athletes from El Salvador. He will compete in compound archery at the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center.

“I’m really proud and very excited about the news. I always wished to represent my country, not only as an athlete but also as the leader of a delegation,” Roberto Hernández said from Berlin, Germany, where he was participating in the Archery World Cup.

NEW VALUES

In Panama, the taekwondo athlete Carolena Carstens was chosen as the flag bearer for the parade of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games opening ceremony. She will replace the sprinter Alonso Edward because he will arrive in Lima after the opening ceremony to compete in athletics.

Cartens will participate for the second time in the Pan American Games after competing at Toronto 2015. She has won gold medals at the Santa Marta 2017 Bolivarian Games and the Managua 2017 Central American Games, and silver medals at the Cochabamba 2018 South American Games and the Barranquilla 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games.

In Guatemala, the gymnast Jorge Vega was chosen to carry the flag. He won a gold medal in floor at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. Vega is one of the favorite candidates to reach the Lima 2019 podium.

In Uruguay, the flag bearer will be the 19-year-old athlete Julieta Mautone that will compete in shooting. Mautone received a gold medal at the Cochabamba 2018 South American Games in 10 m air pistol. She beat the U21 world junior record in the qualification round at the World Cup held in May 2019 in Munich, Germany, where she went into the finals and finished seventh in this contest. At the Pan American Games, Julieta Mautone will compete in 10 m air pistol.

In the Dominican Republic, Crismery Santana was chosen to lead her delegation at Lima 2019. Santana will compete in the 90 kg women’s weightlifting event to be held at the Mariscal Cáceres Coliseum in Chorrillos.

Santana earned gold medals in 90 kg clean and jerk at the Barranquilla 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games in Colombia. The Dominican athlete also took silver and bronze medals at the Weightlifting World Championships held in Turkmenistan.

In Bolivia, Conrado Moscoso will be the flag bearer of the delegation at the Pan American Games. He was one of the most outstanding athletes at Toronto 2015 where he obtained silver and bronze medals in racquetball, along with the brothers Roland and Carlos Keller. So, Moscoso is a medal candidate at Lima 2019 Games.
