After 20 football matches of the U-17 Conmebol South American Championship’s group phase, the San Marcos Stadium earned the approval of the football players and fans, who enjoyed the celebration that untied South America. The stage provided by the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee ensured the success of the competition.
Although, without a doubt, the most emotional moments were experienced during the four matches of the U-17 Peruvian team. The cheers of the 13,000 spectators at every match were essential for Carlos Silvestre’s players to achieve their objective of qualifying to the final round. The expectation has increased so much in recent days that, even for tonight’s debut against Argentina (21:00), tickets sold out in record time.
The San Marcos Stadium welcomes entire families from around the world, who wait in long lines outside the university to get the best seats. Fans praised the university’s accessibility and amenities, making it known that they felt very comfortable in the facility rebuilt for the Pan American Games.
The San Marcos Stadium was remodeled to be the venue for men’s and women’s football. The women’s teams will start playing on July 18, while the men’s teams will start a day later. Finals are scheduled for August 9 and 10, respectively. Therefore, this test run at the continental tournament is very valuable for the Games Organizing Committee.
AIMING FOR THE WORLD CUP
Now, the U-17 Peruvian team’s challenge is to win one of the four slots for the World Cup in Brazil. Starting tomorrow, fans will be able to enjoy three fun matches between the best six teams of the South American Championship. After competing against the Argentinian team, Peru will face Chile, Paraguay, Ecuador and lastly Uruguay.
The Peruvian team had the best run in their history, earning eight points as a result of two victories and two ties, and even placing first in Group A. It is even a better run than that of the Peruvian U-17 “Jotitas” team, that qualified to the South Korea U-17 World Cup at the Ecuador 2007 South American Championship. We hope to meet that goal again in the San Marcos Stadium.
