A few weeks ago, seven athletes gave everything on the field. They never stopped running or competing. People at Villa Maria del Triunfo Sports Center acknowledged their effort.
The Peruvian Women’s Rugby team reached the fourth place in the South American Rugby Championship held in our country. This team will represent Peru at Lima 2019.
Less than 40 days before the Pan American Games, the rugby seven athletes count the hours to “get revenge” and reach the podium.
“We're very excited because we're at home again and our home ground deserves respect. We've been training really hard to have good results and win a medal,” said Natalia Correa, who plays as a forward.
The Peruvian national team is training three times a week in two daily shifts. They do gym exercises in the morning and train on the field in the evening.
“We're working on the physical, technical and tactical side, but especially on mental strength. We lead disciplined lives because we are considered high-performance athletes,” said Michelle Flores, who also plays as a forward.
The Sports Center facilities were tested in the latest South American Championship. They will host the matches at the Lima 2019 Games.
“The sports center is amazing, and no country expected such a well-done job. All countries were impressed with the service level,” said Flores.
Pursuing Dreams
Raysa Gonzales remembers the matches and says it was truly amazing to see the Sports Center crowded in the two days when the South American Championship took place.
“We want to dream. A third place in the Pan American Games would be wonderful. We know it will be difficult since the USA, Argentina and Brazil teams are competing in these Games. However, we're just as good as anyone else,” she said.
The athletes will continue training and expect that Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center will be crowded again. The matches will take place from July 26 to 28. Tickets are already on sale.
“People expect a good show. If they score a try, we will score two. We're going to give more than our 100 percent on the field,” said Raysa.
