The women’s volleyball national team will start training tomorrow for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. The coach Francisco Hervás will work at the High Performance Center in the VIDENA with nine athletes; the other selected athletes, that are still participating in the Peruvian Women’s National League, will join the team next week.
Four members that play for foreign teams, such as Zoila La Rosa, Clarivet Yllescas and Vanessa Palacios, will also participate. They play in the France League and Ángela Leyva plays in Brazil.
“We have decided to preselect 22 volleyball players that will train for the Pan American Games, but it is not the final list because there will be only twelve for the tournament. I know our athletes are self-confident, that is why we have great expectations. We know about everything our athletes do abroad because we are in constant communication to explain them the work plan,” said Hervás to the press.
Shiamara Almeida, Cristina Cuba, Diana De La Peña, Karla Ortiz, Angélica Aquino, Mirian Patiño, Daniela Uribe, Thaisa Mcleod and Esmeralda Sánchez (volleyball players of Alianza Lima, Regatas Lima and Sporting Cristal) will train double shifts to regain physical balance after their exhausting participation in the National League. The first objective of our local strategist is to avoid injuries before training with the whole team in April at the Callao Sports Center.
HIGH COMPETITION LEVEL
Our team will complete a tour around Europe and Asia in May before participating in the Pan American Cup that will begin on July 4 in Lima. Then, it will compete in the Lima 2019 tournament starting on August 7 at the Callao Sports Center against Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Canada and United States teams.
“Improving our competition level in volleyball involves more than just training sessions. We need more time to modify athletes’ behavior in individual activities: strengthening structures to improve our competition. We must reinforce all aspects between competitions,” stated the Spanish coach.
He is aware that at least six teams with a better competition performance than Peru will compete in Lima 2019. However, he pretends to compete for the spectators that will attend to the Callao Sports Center, so they can enjoy the game as in the Peruvian volleyball good times. “Peruvians love Volleyball and we want to preserve that feeling with our contribution to the national team."
