The Soy Lima 2019 Campaign arrived at Fe y Alegría 24 school in Villa María del Triunfo. The visit included several members from the Peruvian women's rugby team: Melissa Vargas, Raysa Gonzáles, Natalia Correa and Michelle Flores.
The event marked the end of the Soy Lima 2019 campaign visits to schools from Villa María del Triunfo. From June 18 to July 9, the campaign will visit a total of ten schools in Villa El Salvador.
During the visit, the rugby athletes, who ended fourth in the recent South American Rugby Championship, took part in an exhibition in front of the students.
“It’s a pleasure and an honor for us to promote our sport a little more. Seeing the girls and boys become so happy even though they don’t know us, just because we have this emblem on our chests... It’s so satisfying and it’s worth every minute of our training,” stressed Melissa Vargas.
This was Natalia Correa's first ever exhibition at a school, so she enthusiastically took pictures, signed autographs and gave tips to the students. “I’m encouraging them to play rugby because it’s a very healthy sport. And maybe someday they’ll be part of the national team, like us,” she said.
Rugby competitions will be held at the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center from July 26 to 28.
“I hope they go to watch us play and learn a little more about rugby. They’re going to love it! It’d be an honor for us to play alongside them during a training session,” concluded Vargas.
Prior to the exhibition, the students carried out the 10 minutes of physical activity promoted by the Ministry of Education, together with the Peruvian athletes and Milco, the Pan American and Parapan American Games official mascot. Then, the sociocultural activity promoting Olympic and Paralympic values was held.
“What Lima 2019 is doing to promote values and an almost unknown sport for both men and women is absolutely crucial. It’s our duty to keep promoting sports,” stated Sadit Yalta, the school principal.
