Less than 60 days before the start of the Games, Villa María del Triunfo is ready for Lima 2019 as one of the venues located in this district will host several sports such as: hockey, rugby-7, archery, baseball, softball, Basque pelota, frontón and water polo at the Pan American Games; as well as football 5-a-side and football 7-a-side at the Parapan American Games.
During the “Soy Lima 2019” campaign at the 7057 Soberana Orden Militar de Malta school, the primary students showed their excitement for the sports exhibitions performed by Peru’s water polo team members Ariana Burga and Diego Villar.
After the 10-minute of physical activity promoted by the Ministry of Education, the children carried Peruvian flags in their hands and observed the performance closely.
“I know the children are very excited, and it’s nice to experience that in person. Water polo is not a popular sport, but this campaign has given us the chance to promote it, so that the district’s population attend the competitions,” explained Ariana Burga, goal scorer at the last U-20 Peruvian Championships.
Diego Villar, who used to play for the Club Natació Granollers swimming club of the first Spanish division, said: “The children had never seen a water polo game, so it was great to teach them a little about our sport. They got excited as soon as they saw our team uniforms, and that made us really happy.”
During the activity, it was announced that water polo would be held from August 4 to 10 at the Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center.
After the sports exhibition and the socio-cultural show organized by Lima 2019, the athletes took pictures with the kids, signed autographs and shared their excitement for the Games.
“It’s important to raise awareness on this event among children because they’ve never lived something like this. Besides, the venues and the pool will remain as a legacy for them,” said Villar.
In this way, Lima 2019 continues with its mission, seeking to promote the Olympic and Paralympic values and to share a life experience based on sports at schools.
