STRATEGIC PARTNERS FOR PAN AMERICAN AND PARAPAN AMERICAN GAMES JOIN LIMA 2019 VOLUNTEER PROGRAM

The Special Project for the Planning and Development of Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games signed an agreement of inter-institutional cooperation with 40 of the main universities in Peru. As a result, they will join the largest multisport event in the Americas through the Volunteer Program.

The Lima 2019 Executive Secretary Amalia Moreno; the Head of the Lima 2019 Volunteer Program Angela Morales; the Lima 2019 Communications, Commercial and Marketing Manager Juan Antonio Silva; and the representatives of the signing universities and institutes attended the ceremony.

Moreno said that Peru has the potential to volunteer since the results of the Volunteer Program were a success.

“We’re making great and it’s being recognized internationally not only for our infrastructure works but also for the operational milestones such as volunteering. From the first day of registration, we broke records and the software collapsed. This had never happened in other countries. However, each university is giving its students (and everybody as Peruvians) the opportunity to work together. This is even a more important milestone. I hope this is just the beginning of a life as a volunteer,” he said.

This agreement aims to reach 45,000 candidates registered in the program and, finally, deliver training to 19,000 volunteers for the Games: 12,000 for the Pan American Games and 7000 for the Parapan American Games. This will be a milestone in the history of sports in Peru.

Morales assured that many of the objectives that were raised since the beginning of the program have been achieved, and that the signing of the agreement of inter-institutional collaboration is a very important milestone because volunteers are “the heart and soul of the Games”.

“The Lima 2019 Volunteer Office has made over 400 coordination visits with universities, institutes, municipalities, regional governments, sports federations and private companies. Also, more than 40 agreements of inter-institutional collaboration have been reached,” she revealed.

Finally, Silva stressed the historical importance of the Lima 2019 Volunteer Program.

“To wear the Lima 2019 jersey is to wear the Peru jersey. This is not just a sports competition. Lima 2019 is an opportunity to build a better country based on sport values. You’re making history. You’ve been strategic partners in the creation of the first generation of Peruvians with a volunteer vocation and culture,” he said to the authorities and representatives of the universities.

It should be noted that, there were a total of 100,094 people in the Volunteer Program, who showed their interest in participating in the largest multi-sport event in the continent by pre-registering to be volunteers at the Pan American and Parapan American Games.

Out of the total number, 61,068 people completed the registration of all their data. 58.53% of them are women, which shows the active participation of women in this type of events. Among them 36,222 are students and 17,783 are professionals.

It is great to know that the program caught the interest of volunteers from 52 countries, whose citizens were interviewed through a virtual system. A total of 1812 foreigners were interviewed. Among the foreign applicants interviewed, 34% were from Argentina, Colombia, Brazil and Mexico.

On the other hand, 547 of the total people registered have some type of impairment. 246 of them participated in the training process.

TRAINING PROGRAM

As part of the volunteer process, the training program will be held by Peruvians at national levels in 15 cities of the country. A total of 28,089 people participated in the Training Program. Among them 51% received training in the District of Lima downtown. Among the participants, 61% are women and 12% are minors.

The Training Program was held in 15 cities of the country, and the venues were: Lima Metropolitan area, Huacho, Cañete, Callao, Chiclayo, Trujillo, Cajamarca, Huancayo, Tacna, Arequipa, Cusco, Tarapoto, Ica, Paracas and Pisco.
