SOUTH AMERICAN FENCING CHAMPIONSHIP REVEALS TALENT FOR PAN AMERICAN GAMES

South American Fencing proved that it has an endless pool of young talent in the Pre-Cadet, Cadet and Junior Championships held at the Lima Convention Center. Brazil prevailed in the Lima 2019 test event and the winners will come back to Peru for the Pan American Games.

Chilean Gustavo Alarcón, gold in Junior Men's Foil Individual and Team will be one of his country’s representatives at the Pan American Games. In the final bout, he defeated highly-ranked Argentinian Augusto Servello and helped to defeat the 'Albicelestes' in the team category. "The tournament's level was amazing in my last year in the Junior category. Now, I'll focus on the Pan American Games and hopefully I'll reach the podium," he said.

Likewise, Brazilian Bruno Pekelman, gold in Junior Men's Sabre Individual and Team, also qualified for Lima 2019 and enjoyed competing in the venue chosen for fencing at the Games. "The competitions were tough. For me, it was a good preview of Lima 2019 because I got to know the place where the bouts will take place." Brazil will also include Enzo Bergamo on the final roster for the Pan American Games.

Meanwhile, Peru finished the contest with two silver medals in Pre-Cadet Women's and Men's Foil for Mariana Soriano and Víctor Ramírez, respectively; and with a bronze medal for Cassandra Cruz in the same category. Finally, the Junior Women's Foil Team won bronze by defeating Colombia in the fight for the third place.

FINAL OUTCOME

After three years, Brazil regained the South American championship by defeating Chile. With a total of 11 gold, 9 silver and 12 bronze medals, Brazil beat Chile, which won 6 gold, 4 silver and 8 bronze medals. Meanwhile, Argentina finished with 2 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals.

Brazilian Victoria Vizeu, who is only 15 years old, stood out after winning four medals in Épée: gold in Junior Women's Team, silver in Pre-Cadet and Cadet, as well as a bronze medal in Junior. "It was a nice experience to compete on the same stage where I'll compete in my first ever Pan American Games. One of my dreams will come true in Lima," she said.
