Peruvian cycling will have a modern venue, remodeled for the Pan American and Parapan American Games.
The velodrome at VIDENA is ready to start operating as the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) certified the stage for Lima 2019 competitions.
Randy Shafer, American UCI official certifier, arrived in Peru to verify the velodrome modern remodeled facilities equipped with a new roof for the official competitions. After his inspection, Shafer certified the track. With this certification, the velodrome is ready to be the venue for track cycling at the Pan American Games and and Para cycling track at the Parapan American Games.
The UCI representative also checked the track cycling competition equipment, which includes the starting gate, photo finish, countdown clock and lap counter. He also verified the track that was tested by Peruvian Team members Samantha Molina and Jeffrey Olivares as well as the Venezuelan Luis Yanez, assistant coach. The Peruvian Cycling Federation president, Gustavo Matus de la Parra, also attended track tests.
95 athletes from all over the Americas will participate in the track cycling competition and the Pan American Games to be held in this venue between August 1 and 4.
Peru will be represented by 16 cyclists between women and men including Andrés Gonzales, who is training in Europe, Royner Navarro and Alonso Gamero, who will participate in the middle-distance cycling events and also in the competition of road cycling at Costa Verde.
Sprint, keirin, omnium, team sprint, team pursuit and madison are the events to be held at the Pan American Games. Women will compete in the same events.
The Parapan American Games individual pursuit and time trial competitions will be held on August 26 and 27..
ABOUT LIMA 2019
The Opening Ceremony of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games will be held at the National Stadium on July 26, 2019. This continental event will gather 6680 athletes from 41 countries and delegations from the Americas. According to the schedule, handball will kick off all competitions starting on July 24.
There will be 19 days of competitions and ceremonies between July 24 and August 11, 2019, which will take place in 14 districts of Lima and Callao at different venues such as the VIDENA, Villa María Sports Center, Callao Regional Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas, among others.
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will include 39 sports and 61 disciplines, in which athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. A total of 22 disciplines are qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
The Parapan American Games will gather 1890 Para athletes from 33 countries, participating in 17 sports and 18 disciplines. Competitions will take place from August 23 to September 1, 2019. A total of 13 Para sports will be qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
