US OLYMPIC AND PARALYMPIC COMMITTEES PRAISE PROGRESS AND PLANNING OF LIMA 2019 ORGANIZATION

Kelly Skinner, chef de mission of the US Olympic Committee (USOC), who completed his visit to Lima today, said: “the progress we’re seeing in terms of planning and venue delivery, is really impressive and it show us the passion and commitment of the host country for the Games success.”

In this context, he reported that they are considering to participate in the Pan American Games with a delegation comprising between 650 and 700 athletes, in addition to the technical staff that will accompany them. That is a delegation of over 1000 people. “We’re training hard and there are 16 sports in which our athletes have really good chances to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games,” he added.

When he was asked about the athletes that will get more attention of the public, he answered: “We’re still in the middle of the athlete selection process, but two teams that will raise expectations in Lima are the water polo women team, which won the gold medal in the Río 2016 Olympic Games and in the previous edition of the Pan American Games, and the basketball men team, which also claimed the gold in Río”.

“Regarding the US Paralympic Committee, its delegation is also training very hard for Lima 2019 and our coordination work is very intense,” said Charlie Paddock, operations director for the Games and member of the delegation. “We consider that Lima 2019, as a host city, is awesome. We’re satisfied to visit the competition venues for the Pan American and Parapan American Games and to arrange the arrival of our Para athletes. Our delegation will be made up of around 200 to 300 people, including the wheelchair basketball team, which won the gold medal in Río 2016 and is very enthusiastic about the idea of coming to Lima and compete against the best Para athletes of the continent.”

This is the fourth visit of the US delegation and the one that has included more representatives so far, with 85 members of the Olympic and Paralympic Committees.

During the first day, they visited the apartments built for athletes and Para athletes in the Pan American and Parapan American Village located in Villa El Salvador. There they observed the infrastructure and facilities that make the Village the biggest accessible residential complex in Peru.

In the afternoon, the group of officials visited VIDENA and other competition venues such as Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, which will house seven sports and two Para sports; Miguel Grau Coliseum located in Callao, which will house goalball, boxing and wrestling; the Army Equitation School in La Molina for equestrian sports; and the High-performance Surfing Center in Punta Rocas Beach, among others.

The US officials completed their visit today after meeting with the sport managers of Lima 2019 and the functional areas of the organization such as Accreditation, Transportation, Security, Catering and Medical Services, to coordinate the arrangements for the Pan American and Parapan American Games to be held next July and August.
