VICE-PRESIDENT OF PERU AND DELEGATION OF CONGRESS REPRESENTATIVES VISIT VILLA EL SALVADOR VENUES FOR THE LIMA 2019 GAMES

Vice-president of Peru, Mercedes Aráoz, and representatives Luciana León, Edmundo del Águila, Gino Costa, Marco Miyashiro, Edwin Vergara and Guido Lombardi visited the infrastructure works this afternoon, that are been carried out for the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games in the Pan American and Parapan American Village and in Villa El Salvador Sports Center.

The delegation was received by Carlos Neuhaus Tudela, Lima 2019 executive director, and Wilhelm Funcke, Lima 2019 Project and Infrastructure manager, who were in charge of the progress presentation and the guided tour to both venues.

Mercedes Aráoz, vice-president of Peru, was satisfied with what they saw at these venue visits. “Seeing works are underway and that the Village already finished is very satisfying. The Village is ready and has functioning water, light and gas services. The Sports Center, with a progress of 80%, is a great example of the work done under the Government to Government model and engineering contracts, an interesting model to be replicated in other works,” she said.

“I am very satisfied and I am excited for what is happening in Lima 2019. There will be an important legacy for the city and I am sure that it will be a great sport event. These venues will be a legacy for young people, who will become world champions in the future,” she added.

On the other hand, Congressman Gino Costa highlighted the completion of the Pan American and Parapan American Village and the progress made in the Sports Center infrastructure, both located in the heart of Villa El Salvador. “I am impressed with the progress. I did not know it was so advanced. Lima 2019 will start with a brand new Village and all the works required to to ensure the Games’ success. It is satisfying to know that an excellent job has been done. That is why the organization will be successful. The future challenge will be to benefit from all the high-quality infrastructure that Lima 2019 will leave,” he said.

It is important to mention that Villa El Salvador Sports Center is a new facility located near the Village. This venue is in the last construction stage and it will be delivered next May, so athletes competing there will have enough time to test it before the Pan American Games.

Construction is in the final stage and by March 2019, 95% of the work will be ready for the Lima 2019 Games. Construction works are on schedule.

THE PAN AMERICAN AND PARAPAN AMERICAN VILLAGE

Congress representatives were able to confirm that the Pan American and Parapan American Village was finished ahead of time, as the delivery date was March 31. The village has 1096 apartments, 548 of them of 70 m2, 212 of 73 m2 and 336 of 75 m2. These last apartments have been modified to be accessible for people with impairments. Each building has four elevators with capacity for up to 18 people and wheelchair access.

At the end of 2018, the finishing works of four buildings, one with 20 stories and three with 19 stories were finished. The Pan American and Parapan American Village will receive around 10,000 residents. Also, it will be the largest accessible accommodation facility in the country.

The Village has podotactile tiles in the pedestrian areas and bike lanes to ease the transit of athletes with visual impairment to their accommodation buildings. Also, the implementation of braille signage on all the floors of the Pan American and Parapan American Village concluded last December.

This “universal language” warns and informs people about the transit and necessary measures in case of an event endangering an athlete with visual impairment. This system was also installed in the elevator buttons, which are located at the sides of each building.

These buildings also have spacious inner corridors and 28 elevators to facilitate the transit of people with impairments who have to move around in a wheelchair.

Last March 16, more than 500 volunteers, athletes and Para athletes participated in the test run of the Pan American and Parapan American Village. They simultaneously tested the proper use of services and the accessibility of the seven buildings.

VILLA EL SALVADOR SPORTS CENTER

The construction works in Villa El Salvador Sports Center started 11 months ago and exceeding the 75% works progress of this new sports venue located near the Pan American and Parapan American Village.

It is located on a 49,000 m2 area and will have two blocks: one for competitions and another one for training. The projected sports venue comprises mainly two different stages, that work functionally together, to house the Lima 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games.

The main structure will be made of out of concrete and metallic structures, which has two fixed and one retractable stands for over 5,000 people, as well as accessible zones for people with impairments, sanitary facilities with the same characteristics and dressing rooms available for athletes during the competition.

The second structure is basically a metallic structure and it will be used as a warm-up facility before competitions. After the Games, it will be a Legacy Gymnastics Sports Center.

This new Sports Center will house gymnastics and karate competitions during the Pan American Games. It will host wheelchair rugby and boccia during the Parapan American Games.
