In order to facilitate the commute of Lima 2019 athletes with visual impairments staying at the Village, Lima 2019 started with the tactile paving installation in the pedestrian areas and the bike lane of the Athletes’ Village, located in the district of Villa El Salvador.
These floors have a special embossment that allows people with visual impairments walk near public roads, a steep or a crosswalk while being alert to their surroundings.
Braille
Last December concluded the implementation of Braille signage on all the floors of the Athletes’ Village.
This “universal language” warns and informs people about the flow and necessary measures in case of an event endangering an athlete with visual impairment.
This system was also placed in the four elevators’ dials, which are distributed in two axis, in each of its seven towers, so people can operate them to reach the desired floor.
These buildings have spacious inner corridors and elevators to facilitate the transit of people with impairments who have to move around in a wheelchair.
Considering athletes and technical officials from the different delegations participating in the Games, the Athletes’ Village will house 7902 residents during the Pan Am Games and 2955 during the Parapan Am Games. The main accommodation venue for Lima 2019 will become the largest accessible accommodation facility in the country.
Finishing touches of the towers
At the end of 2018, the finishing works on the floors of the 7 buildings concluded, soon the painting of doors, walls and ceilings will begin.
There are 1096 apartments at the Village, 548 of them of 70 m2, 212 of 73 m2 and 336 of 75 m2. These last apartments have been modified to be accessible for people with impairments. Each building has four elevators with a capacity for up to 18 people and wheelchair access.
The works will be fully completed by March 31, 2019.
In addition, the complementary works, external networks and landscaping will be completed in the upcoming months.
The Athletes’ Village is a monumental work that will leave an important housing legacy for the population of Villa El Salvador and the country. Its future residents will be able to live in apartments made with the highest standards.
