The Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center hosted today the first day of the XXI Wallace National Rugby Sevens Championship, a competition that brought together elite teams and future local stars of this discipline.
All participating teams showed their high competition level, as well as the growth and great reception of this sport in Peru. Among the contestants were the San Ignacio de Loyola University, the National University of San Marcos, the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences, the University of Piura, the Alumni, the Flaming Lions, the Navy Warriors, and the Esna Bulldogs.
The Lima 2019 Organizing Committee will continue its preparation works during Sunday, when the finalist teams will play on the artificial turf of the modern sports stage. The fields of play look spectacular and the surrounding areas are ready to welcome all athletes.
The first official test event at the new stadium will take place on June 1 and 2 this year. The winner of the Women's Pre-Olympic, made up of 10 South American national teams, will directly qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Meanwhile, the best team without a quota place will qualify for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, which will open on July 26.
PERUVIAN MEN'S TEAM
Men still must win their quota place for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games. According to the Panam Sports Qualification Manual, men's teams must try to qualify following the Rugby Americas - South America Rugby process.
“The Tumis”, as they are also known, will play the qualifier and also the pre-Olympic rounds in Chile on June 29 and 30. South American rugby-7 top teams, such as Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, have already qualified for Lima 2019 and are looking for a quota place for Tokyo 2020.
LIMA 2019
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will open on July 26, 2019 in a ceremony to be held at the National Stadium. This continental sports event will gather 6680 athletes from 41 countries and delegations from all over the Americas.
The Parapan American Games will gather 1890 Para athletes from 33 countries participating in 17 sports and 18 disciplines. The competitions will take place between August 23 and September 1, 2019. A total of 14 sports will grant quota places for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
