The excitement we all experienced at the Women's U-20 Volleyball International Quadrangular Tournament was only the preamble to the volleyball competitions at the Pan American Games. Hundreds of families will gather again at the Callao Sports Center to watch the matches of the Peruvian national teams, who recently draw their opponent’s in both men’s and women's.
In Group A, Peru’s women's team, led by Francisco “Paco” Hervás, will make its debut against Canada on August 7 at 20:30, while Dominican Republic and Colombia will kick off the pool competitions. On the same day, Brazil will compete against Puerto Rico at 13:00, and the United States will face Argentina at 15:00 in Group B, which comprises the top contenders.
Moreover, Peru and Puerto Rico men’s teams will kick off Group A competitions on July 31 at 12:30. Peru will go up against Argentina the next day at the same time and will play against Cuba on August 2. As for Group B, the qualification by repechage of a team from North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) is still pending. This delegation will join Mexico, Brazil, and Chile in Group B.
Peru will have the unconditional support of its fans, who also attended the Women's U-20 Volleyball International Quadrangular Tournament held last weekend in Callao. The sports center was filled with energy as the Lima 2019 Sports Presentation team encouraged the public on the stands to cheer on their favorite team during the halftime of each set.
ABOUT THE FORMAT
Volleyball will be played according to the International Volleyball Federation rules. Men's fixtures are from July 31 to August 4, while women will compete from August 7 to 11. The Callao Sports Center, venue for this event, has capacity for 6100 spectators and was built for the Lima 2019 Games.
The preliminary round will be played in a round-robin format, with two groups of four teams each. The top two teams of each pool will move to the semifinals. Then, the best two will qualify for the finals to compete for the gold. Meanwhile, the third-placed teams of each preliminary round will compete for the fifth and sixth place.
ABOUT LIMA 2019
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games is a continental event that will gather 6680 athletes from 41 countries and will open on July 26 at the National Stadium. There will be 17 days of competitions, which will take place in 14 districts of Lima and Callao. Some of the main venues will be the VIDENA, Villa María del Triunfo Sports Center, Callao Regional Sports Village, Villa El Salvador Sports Center, Punta Rocas, among others.
The Lima 2019 Pan American Games will include 39 sports and 61 disciplines, in which athletes will compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. A total of 22 disciplines are qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
