Less than a month before the official start of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, the First Vice President of the Congress of the Republic of Peru, Leyla Chihuán, toured the Callao Sports Center and supervised the progress of the construction site in the venue located in the district of San Miguel, to be soon delivered.
"We are already in the last phase, and everything is really impressive. This is what Peru deserves and needs so that, after the Games, we will be able to host high-level international competitions," said the congresswoman.
The sports venue, located at the Costa Verde (San Miguel), will host road cycling, BMX cycling, BMX free style, beach volleyball, and speed skating competitions. While the Callao Sports Center, located in the Callao Regional Sports Village, will host women's and men's volleyball, sitting volleyball, taekwondo, and Para taekwondo.
The congresswoman, visibly impressed by the Callao Sports Center, recalled her golden years in the Peruvian national team.
"When we competed in tournaments in Japan, the United States or Europe, we always found this kind of venues. This is what Peruvian Volleyball needed. The Dibós coliseum was always our home, but if you compare both venues, let's say that the Dibós can fit inside this Sports Center: this Sports Center is going to be sort of the Dibós’ mother".
She also mentioned the high expectation that the Games create among the Peruvian athletes. Sports are important not only for medals but also for social changes that will bring a sparkle to Peruvian people’s eyes.
"They [Peruvian Volleyball Federation] athletes are very enthusiastic. Not only them, who are training here, for now, but also the taekwondo national team. This will also be their venue. We wish that everything goes according to plan, and being the stars at the medal table, and -why not- being among the five countries that obtain more medals in these Games."
Beyond the purely sporting fact, she reflected on the positive impact that Lima 2019 will have on the district of Callao and the power of sports among the vulnerable population.
"This is also what Callao needed to keep the kids away from bad company. Sport is the alternative to build a clean, healthy and safe society."
