The President, Marrtin Vizcarra, participated in the Lighting of the Pan American Torch, that arrived at the Machu Picchu citadel after flying across the American Continent arriving in Cuzco from Teotihuacán, México. And so the two millenarian American cultures were symbolically united.
The Huayna Picchu mountain served as background when, Vizcarra, sporting the Peruvian Football Team jersey that embodies the Olympic values present in sports , received the flaming Pan American Torch from the hands of a chasqui.
“It is a transcendental thing. Specially here, at the Machu Picchu citadel, an important and symbolic place for all Peruvians and for all humanity. The Pan American Flame that came from Teotihuacan, Mexico, has arrived here today to unite two millenarian cultures and civilizations. That, in a way, represents the Lima 2019 Games, the union of peoples through sports.” he said, accompanied by the President of the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee, Carlos Neuhaus; and the Mayor of Lima, Jorge Muñoz.
He also predicted a great success for the multi sport event, to be held in the country for the first time, and he highlighted the efforts and commitment of the athletes who will give us life lessons that, as a country, we will absorb during the course of Lima 2019.
“The Relay will be the beginning of an event that we are sure will be spectacular, just like yesterday’s football game was: our national team proved that when you play as a team, with effort and dedication you can achieve any goal.. Our ancestor, her in Machu Picchu, taught us that, and it was confirmed yesterday by the football players and the same will do the Athletes from Peru and the other 41 countries participating in this Games. Welcome to the event, everyone. Peru waits for you with open arms.
