The remodeled athletics stadium of the VIDENA reopened its doors to receive this morning the South American Grand Prix Pedro Gálvez Velarde, international event organized by the Peruvian Athletics Federation that gathered a score of athletes from eight countries, who agreed on the spectacular place and how fast the Class 1 track was built.
Marco Vilca from Arequipa established a new junior record (U 20) and U 23 in 800 meters in this international event. He made one minute, 48 seconds and 60 hundredths to establish the second best mark in the Peruvian history according to PAF, only surpassed by David Torrence who timed 1min 47s 01 in May 2017 in California (United States).
“The track is spectacular, it feels fast and definitely it helped me especially in the final stages, when I felt that the two Brazilians were close,” said the athlete, who was national champion of seniors last weekend. Vilca has defended before the Peruvian colors at the World Junior Athletics Championships in Kenya and World Youth Athletics Championship in Finland, and it is expected to see him participate in the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
The Grand Prix Pedro Gálvez Velarde reminds the first South American champion that Peru had in 1924, in any sport.
Athletes from Panama, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay and Argentina participated in this event.
