A total success. The Flame that lights up Peru went through seven kilometers of celebrations, and after a relay of 39 torchbearers, it reached the Huancayo stadium in Ocopilla for the closing hosted by the Wanka ambassador Ruby Palomino.
At exactly 05:00, the three-time Olympic marathon runner Juan José Castillo took the first steps with the lighted torch in Avenida Huancavelica, Chilca district. The setting was already full of color.
Minutes before, traditional dances like ‘Danza de las Tijeras’, ‘Congalla’, and ‘Santiago’, made Huancayo citizens, athletes and authorities dance.
Streets were full of students cheering for the athletes, specially for Kenydi Fernández, an outstanding athlete that will be one of the ambassadors of the Wanka sport in Para Taekwondo.
Afterwards, there was a standing ovation when the Olympic long-distance runner in Rio de Janeiro, Jovana De la Cruz received the Flame. De la Cruz is a Huancayo MVP, who placed 11th in the renowned Houston marathon.
Kimberly García León, another Olympic athlete from Huancayo, was in charge of last section of the relay and the lightning of the cauldron, who placed fifth in the last Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. The 25-year-old athlete carries the hopes of Huancayo and Peru on race walk.
At the stadium, the Peruvian National Police offered a colorful musical performance that surprised the public.
The Lima 2019 Flame traveled seven km surrounded by the people's applause in all the streets. After that, it reached in the front row for the presentation of the winner of ‘La Voz Peru’ Ruby Palomino, who was very excited for singing to her beloved city during this celebration. Hugged by the torchbearers, she sang ‘Cholo Soy’, ‘Muchacho provinciano’, among other Peruvian songs that Ruby performed with her particular style. This was a great closing at the happiest city of Peru.
