Arequipa. On the fourth day of its journey across Peru, the Pan American Torch arrived in Arequipa and traveled 14.5 km through its main streets and avenues.
A total of 79 torchbearers participated in the relay, including outstanding athletes and distinguished citizens chosen because of their services to the White City. However, two brothers came under the spotlight because of their sports achievements. We are talking about Genaro and Ernesto “El Chivo” Neyra, FC Melgar professional football players, Peruvian First Division champions in 1981.
The torch relay started at Palacio Goyeneche at about 10:45.
Then, the Pan American torch visited the emblematic Yanahuara viewpoint, where a torchbearer got on a platform which was lifted to get the best view of the Misti volcano.
The relay finished at 14:00 in Arequipa’s Main Square, where a great celebration was experienced not only because of the visit of the Pan American Torch, but also because of the Copa América final match between Peru and Brazil.
