Peru had a good start at the Para Powerlifting World Cup thanks to Diego Quispe, who won the bronze medal in -54 kg. The outstanding Para athlete lifted an aggregate weight of 100 kg in his first attempt, which was enough to secure a spot on the podium of an international event for the first time in his career.
Despite being diagnosed with achondroplasia when he was 6, he never let this stopped his sports career. He may be 1.32 meters tall and the shortest powerlifter in Peru, but he has his mind set on the Parapan American Games gold medal.
“This medal is for all Peruvians for their support during my training and their cheers. Though I’ve participated in other world championships, I had never won a medal. I hope to get another one at Lima 2019. The best part is that it was at home and my mother and grandmother were watching me from the stands,” said the Peruvian champion.
The event will continue tomorrow at 10:30 at the Sports Center 2 of the VIDENA. Tomorrow, Niel Garcia from Piura (-59 kg), Mauricio Cavero (-65 kg) and Miguel Siesquén (-72 kg) will try to give more victories to our country.
HIGH-LEVEL COMPETITION
It is the first time our capital hosts an edition of the World Cup of the International Powerlifting Federation and the first test event organized by the Lima 2019 Organizing Committee.
In order to foster the practice of this discipline in our country, tickets are free for the public. To pick up your ticket, you only have to present your ID card on the day of the competition at 9:30 at the Gate 2, located on Avenida Del Aire.
ABOUT LIMA 2019
The Parapan American Games will gather 1890 Para athletes from 33 countries, participating in 17 sports and 18 disciplines. The competitions will take place between August 23 and September 1, 2019. Additionally, 13 sports are qualifiers for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
The Para Powerlifting World Cup is being held from August 29 to 31 at the Sports Center 2 of the VIDENA, where the continent’s top 90 Para powerlifters will compete in 20 weight events (10 for men and 10 for women).
