A variant of volleyball, this sport is played on sand, generally at the beach and has less athletes per team. Beach volleyball took place for the first time at the 1999 Winnipeg Pan American Games.
It was invented in Santa Monica, California, in the 1920s. There were six players per team until 1930, when some players did not show up for a match so they decided to change the format to 2 vs. 2. The first beach volleyball world tournament was held in 1976.
